Anguilla is an amazing island, rich in empty white-sand beaches, translucent waters and friendly and industrious inhabitants who have kept out junky development. It is therefore a prohibitally expensive island, and for those of us whose taste outruns their pocketbooks, usually just plain prohibited.

Till now. When my husband and I saw the deal--$150 a night off-season for a remodeling hotel on Meads Bay-- we crossed our fingers and leapt. Thank God.

When we got here there, there were free welcoming cold towels, rum punches and a friendly woman who did not seem to mind that our plane had run late. It was night, so I could not see the abundent gardens, the seaside path nor the acqua waters, but I did take in the cool stone and tile floors, the high ceilings, the perfect island taste of white stucco and fabric and dark wood.

Our room was a double cube, large and lofty, done in simple chic--more white fabric and brown wood. Everything we needed was there. Nothing we did not was not. No pretension; all elegance, an elegance firmly rooted in a sense of a particular place, a timeless West Indies elegance

Morning come I went out onto our second floor balcony, which was wreathed in blooming bougenvilla, to take a gander. The gardens (and I am a gardener,) were everything the website had promised. Golden flower, plumabago, bougenvilla, vinca, and many trees and perennials I can\'t name (OK--suggestion, --labels--, for plant nuts like me.) All this, and tall mature palms and coconut trees, around a large pool.

What more can I say, -- except that the food was good, the beach lovely, the staff enthusiastically pleasent and efficient, and our stay one we will remember for the rest of our lives.

My husband had recently escaped from a business convention in Orlando, FL. Needless to say, this was much more his idea of the happiest place on earth.
